Father and Son FAQs

  • How does the competition work?

An incomparable experience, the Father and Son golf event is designed to combine competition with connection and joy. It’s a four-day event designed to be as memorable off the course as it is on it. Here is the competition format:

Team Competition: 72 Holes Across Iconic Links

    • You and your teammate will compete as a two-man team in a Better Ball Stableford format
    • The best net score between the two of you on each hole counts toward your team’s score
    • The tournament is played over four stunning St Andrews courses, with each round bringing its own set of challenges and stories
    • Handicaps are adjusted at 85% for fairness, ensuring every shot and every point truly matters
    • The team with the highest total Stableford points across the four rounds takes home the title

Individual Competition – A Round to Remember on the Old Course

    • On the day you play the Old Course, you’ll also compete individually
    • Prizes are awarded for the best net score (with 95% handicap), with a scratch prize for the best gross score – for those chasing that pure performance
    • It’s your chance to walk in the footsteps of legends – and maybe play your best round yet!

    Daily Nearest the Pin Contests

    • Each tournament day features two nearest the pin competitions
    • These offer a chance to win prizes and claim a little daily glory for yourself, regardless of how the team score is going
  • What prizes are up for grabs?

The 2026 prizes are yet to be announced, but you won’t be disappointed. The 2025 winners landed a trip to Augusta to watch the Masters. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Note: The top 3 teams in the overall standings will be excluded from the daily team prizes to keep things competitive for everyone – but they’ll still be in the mix for 'nearest the pin' honors each day.

  • Who can enter?

Requirements to enter are as follows:

    • Open to fathers and sons or fathers and sons-in-law
    • Must be 18 or older
    • Handicap limit is 24
    • A valid handicap certificate at 36 or lower is required for the Old Course
    • Golfers 65+ or with a handicap index of 14 or higher can play from the forward tees
    • Scoring follows the World Handicap System
  • Can I bring my family?
Of course, family members are more than welcome! Whether your loved ones want to watch you on the course or enjoy the local sights and landmarks, family and friends can join you on your trip to the Father and Son event. Explore our off-course experiences for more travel inspiration.
  • How far is it from Edinburgh Airport?
Edinburgh airport is around 50 miles from St Andrews. Dundee airport, which is just a half-hour drive from St Andrews, is preferable if you’re arriving on a domestic flight.
  • What is the dress code?

The dress code is generally relaxed during your stay. Of course, smart casual golf attire is expected on courses.

Men are required to wear a white dress shirt for the final night. A full Scottish outfit (including a traditional kilt) will be provided.

  • Can I extend my trip?
Want to add extra rounds of golf, more sightseeing, or perhaps a trip to a distillery? We’re more than happy to help. Just speak with our expert team to arrange your ideal golf trip.
