The 2026 U.S. Open produced four days of gripping golf at the iconic Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, with Wyndham Clark holding his nerve to secure a second U.S. Open title and his second major championship. Clark finished at four-under-par, one shot ahead of Sam Burns, after a tense final-round battle on one of golf's most demanding courses.

Shinnecock Hills once again showed why it is regarded as one of the toughest venues in championship golf. Firm fairways, lightning-fast greens and unpredictable coastal winds punished even the smallest mistakes. Scoring was at a premium throughout the week, with only three players finishing under par.

Clark set the tone from the opening round, firing a brilliant six-under 64 to take the early lead. He followed it up with a 69 on Friday to establish a four-shot advantage at the halfway stage, setting a 36-hole U.S. Open scoring record at Shinnecock Hills.

Moving day saw the course bare its teeth, but Clark continued to separate himself from the field. Despite a rollercoaster third round featuring bogeys, birdies and a spectacular eagle on the par-five 16th, he maintained control and stretched his lead to six shots heading into Sunday. That eagle proved to be one of the standout moments of the tournament and showcased the aggressive golf that put him in command.

The final round was anything but straightforward. Clark's overnight lead quickly came under threat as Sam Burns mounted a charge with a superb closing 67. Clark stumbled at times and carded a three-over 73, but crucial par saves and a vital birdie at the 16th helped him fend off the challenge. Burns finished just one shot back, while Tom Kim claimed third place after an impressive week.

There were plenty of memorable moments throughout the championship, from Clark's eagle on Saturday to Burns' late birdie run that almost forced a playoff. Scottie Scheffler entered the week chasing the career Grand Slam and remained in contention for much of the tournament before finishing tied fourth.

In the end, the 2026 U.S. Open was a classic test of patience, precision and resilience. Shinnecock Hills demanded perfection, and while nobody mastered it completely, Wyndham Clark handled the challenge better than anyone else to add another major trophy to his growing collection.
