For many golfers, teeing it up at one of the world’s most legendary courses - like the Old Course or Kingsbarns in St Andrews, Pebble Beach, Adare Manor, Royal Portrush, or Royal Melbourne - is the ultimate bucket list experience. But playing a famous course isn’t just about showing up with your clubs. A little preparation can go a long way toward making it memorable for all the right reasons.

1. Research the course layout

Iconic courses often have quirks, history, and signature holes that make them special. Spend time studying the course guide, hole-by-hole flyovers, or watching past tournaments. Knowing where to aim, where to miss, and when to play safe is key to a good round (and fewer lost balls). Caddies are also a great bank of knowledge for course information.

2. Practice in realistic conditions

If you're heading to a links course, practice in the wind and on firm turf. This is especially true if you’re heading to somewhere like St Andrews - the weather, wind and conditions can be a challenge for even the most competent golfers.

And, if you’re facing tight fairways or fast greens, tailor your short game and driving accuracy. Simulating those conditions - even at your local range - can give you a big confidence boost.

3. Dial in your equipment

Get your clubs checked, especially lofts and lies, and make sure your wedges and putter suit the conditions. At windy, coastal course - like the New Course, Castle Course or Dumbarnie, a driving iron or lower-lofted fairway wood might be a smart addition.

4. Work on your mental game

It’s easy to get overwhelmed standing on the first tee of a world-famous course. Prepare by focusing on routine, breathing, and playing one shot at a time. Treat it like any other round - just with a better view.

5. Arrive early, soak it in

Give yourself time to settle in, enjoy the surroundings, and make a proper warm-up part of your experience. Whether it’s walking the course the day before or visiting the pro shop, immersing yourself in the atmosphere helps turn nerves into excitement.

At The Experience Golf, we have an expert team on hand from the minute you enquire about an experience with us. Let us help you prepare, so you can focus on making memories and hopefully, securing some birdies along the way!
