Dromoland Castle Golf Course

The beautiful parkland course meanders through lakes, marshes and woodlands. Even the River Rine poses as a naturally occurring hazard on three of the holes. Enjoy a picturesque yet challenging round with fast greens, strategic bunkers, and perfectly manicured fairway. The layout can now be bracketed alongside some of the other great household names in southwest Ireland. Dromoland is certainly well worth a visit - The setting is nothing short of spectacular.

A Brief History

  • Located just eight miles from Shannon airport, the course is set within the magnificent 360-acre Dromoland Castle estate.
  • The course at Dromoland Castle has been around for more than half a century (opening initially as a 9-hole layout in 1963) but in recent years, dramatic changes have elevated it to new levels.
  • One of Europe’s most formidable design teams, Ron Kirby and Joe Carr, teamed up to re-design this parkland layout in 2002

Featured hole – 7th hole

The signature 7th, stands high above a postage stamp sized green with water left and a shamrock bunker to the right.

Other very notable and spectacular mentions are:

  • The 9th hole, reminiscent of the 10th on the Brabazon course at the Belfry. The 280-yard carry to the green will tempt the big hitters.
  • The par 4 16th hole is worthy of a mention too; this long hole requires players to carry a large ravine on their approach.

Known For: Its Historic Setting and Pars

With Dromoland Lough and Castle providing a delightful backdrop, it is well known in Ireland for being one of the best Parkland courses in the country. It is set on 450-acres of land on the Dromoland Castle estate and features gentle hills, ancient trees, and water hazards. A very strong pair of long par fours open and close the front nine, four of the five par threes measure more than 175 yards in length and two of the final three holes are stout par fives. Any net score, approaching the standard scratch of one more than the par total of 70, will be hard fought for.
