Blessed with two superb golf courses, the O'Meara Course was created by the former Masters and Open Champion, Mark O'Meara who constructed a stunning golf course at Carton House Golf Club that has made especially good use of the existing mature woodland. Rightly regarded as one of Ireland’s best golf resorts, Carton House Golf Club offers two very different, but equally excellent courses. The shorter of the two on-site courses, this is a classic parkland test - manicured, lush and beautiful to behold. Together they form Carton House Golf Club, a true Irish gem.
A Brief History
- The O’Meara course is the oldest of the two at Carton House, opening for lay in 2002.
- Carton Estate was the family seat of the Leinsters from 1176 and it is Lady Emily Leinster who is credited with adding a wide variety of non-native trees to the property in the middle of the 18th century.
- The 561-yard, par five, 15th crosses the river not once but twice between the tee and green and this heroic hole is sandwiched between two wonderful par threes.
- Tyrconnel Tower overlooks the course and can be viewed from eleven holes.
Featured hole – 14th Hole
Particularly noteworthy holes are 13, 14 and 15 which are guarded by the River Rye, with the 14th capturing the beautiful Shell Cottage as a backdrop.
