Woburn Marquess Course

Set within 200 acres of ancient, rolling woodland on the breathtaking Woburn Abbey estate, the Marquess Course straddles the counties of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. This extraordinary setting - part of a 3,000-acre estate that has been home to the Dukes of Bedford for over 350 years - lends the course an atmosphere of quiet grandeur. Today, Woburn Abbey remains the residence of the Marquess of Tavistock and his family, and it’s from his title that the course takes its name.

The Marquess course straddles the county boundary of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire and is set within 200 acres of majestic mature woodland, part of the delightful 3,000-acre Woburn Abbey estate, home of the Dukes of Bedford for over 350 years. Woburn Abbey is presently home for the Marquess of Tavistock and his family, the new course taking the name from his title.

A Brief History

This is a course built for champions, but designed for every golfer who appreciates the beauty of a world-class layout in an unforgettable setting. Opened to widespread acclaim, the Marquess quickly established itself as a formidable and elegant test of golf, stretching over 7,000 yards from the back tees. In 2001 and 2002, it made headlines by taking over hosting duties for the British Masters from the older Dukes Course, with Thomas Levet and Justin Rose claiming victory in those first two years.

Since then, the Marquess has continued to build on its tournament pedigree, playing host to a number of prestigious events, including:

  • The Ricoh Women's British Open (2016)
  • The AIG Women’s British Open (2019)
  • The English Men’s Amateur Championship
  • Four editions of the British Masters Final Qualifying for The Open (2014–2017)

This is a course built for champions, but designed for every golfer who appreciates the beauty of a world-class layout in an unforgettable setting.

Featured Hole – 7th

The 7th hole is often regarded as the Marquess’ signature, and for good reason. With its split fairway separated by a line of mature trees, it offers both risk and reward in equal measure. A bold tee shot to the narrower left side brings the green within reach, but only for those willing to take on the challenge. The wider, safer right-hand fairway sets up a longer approach, but offers a more conservative path to par. It’s the kind of hole that stays with you long after the round ends - a perfect expression of the Marquess experience.
