About St George's Hill Golf Club
One of Surrey's many heathland courses, however not one to missed. St George's Hill always promises thrill and excitement, as the land sweeps and undulates like a fairground rollercoaster. The elevation changes are something that each golfer must navigate. However, the spectacular views from each corner of the course, as well as from the highest point on the course, The Clubhouse, make the challenge all so worth it - a course that is picture-perfect at every hole. Harry Colt considers St George's Hill his ultimate masterpiece - and everyone who has played will know why.
A Brief History
St George's Hill was one of over 300 courses designed by world-famous golf architect, Harry Colt. Colt took to the stage in 1912, designing a course of 6,300 yards and par 75. A year later, it opened it's doors; and was opened by Prince Alexander of Teck, the Clubs first President, on 2nd October. 12 of the leading professionals of the day, including J H Taylor, the Open Champion, James Braid, and Abe Mitchell played in the opening competition. It was won by George Duncan with a 71. In the 1920s, the iconic Clubhouse was added to the course. The Red and Blue nines make up the main course at St George's Hill, with a third nine - the Green nine - upgraded in 1987. Whilst not as prestigious as the Red & Blue, the Green is still regarded for its beauty and challenge.
Highlights
Voted as the No.6 course in England by Golf Digest, there's a few reasons why; the purple heather of summer and early autumn enhances both the allure and the difficulty of the course. Tall pines frame each hole and create a sense of splendid isolation from rest of the course. The magnificent castle-like clubhouse overlooks the course also, meaning its beauty and difficult combine to make this an unforgettable round to anyone who graces the course.
