A tough year in 2024
Mcllroy has had some agonising finishes this year already, he hasn’t won a major for a good few years and the US Open was well and truly in his grasp. Unfortunately, he lost his two-shot lead in the closing few holes and just couldn’t hold par on the 18th for a play-off. DeChambeau - the talented, hard hitting American took full advantage of this and simply had the consistency on the day that Rory didn’t.
As if that wasn’t gut wrenching enough, Mcllroy found himself in a similar situation in the more recent Irish Open that happened 12–15 September 2024. He needed to make an eagle to secure his spot in a play-off against Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard, and with a 10-feet putt that he has made thousands of times in his career, it swerved in the last few centimeters.
What a win that would have been for Rory, especially in front of a home crowd.
Fast forward a week, to the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and Rory was even closer to a win – if that’s possible. Mcllroy found himself in a three-way play-off this time, against the USA’s Billy Horschel (the eventual winner) and South Africa’s Lawrence Thriston.
After a close battle between Mcllroy and Horschel, it was Horschel who held his nerve to claim the title and it was Mcllroy who once again fell short.
Now, it’s not all doom and gloom for Mcllroy, there for many positives for him to take away from 2024. Yes, it must have been extremely tough to come so close, so many times but he has been up there – battling for the titles.
It takes a lot of mental strength to come back from the year Mcllroy has had, we have no doubt he is capable, but can he pick himself for 2025?
A Glimpse into the Future
As we look ahead to the upcoming season, all eyes are on McIlroy as he prepares to embark on another chapter of his illustrious career. With his sights set on adding to his already impressive trophy cabinet, McIlroy's schedule is packed with prestigious events.
