The third major of the season is nearly upon us. The 2024 US Open Championship, will be played from June the 13th to 16th, and it is being hosted by one of the world’s great courses.
As many golf fans will know, the US Open is regarded as the hardest major of the year. Course set up is often brutal and this year will be no different.

The Origins of a Golfing Legacy

The US Open Championship traces its roots back to 1895 when it was first contested at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island. Conceived by the United States Golf Association (USGA). In that same year, James Walker Tufts, bought 5,500 acres of land in North Carolina. The Pinehurst Resort was born.

Just over a decade later, Donald Ross came in and created the No. 2 Course, “The fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed”. Ross would then spend many decades at Pinehurst and become forever associated with this hallowed land. This year, the US Open returns to one of the most celebrated courses on the rota

Legends of golf Tiger woods and Jack Nicklaus get ready for the US Open

Legends of the Game

Throughout its illustrious history, the US Open has witnessed the rise of golfing legends who have etched their names into the annals of the sport. From the iconic Jack Nicklaus, who holds the record for most US Open victories with four, to the indomitable Tiger Woods, whose remarkable comeback in 2008 at Torrey Pines remains one of the most memorable moments in golf, the tournament has been a stage for greatness.

Other legendary winners include Ben Hogan, whose resilience and determination earned him four US Open titles, and Arnold Palmer, whose charismatic presence and electrifying performances captivated audiences worldwide. More recently, players like Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, and Brooks Koepka have added their names to the prestigious list of champions.

At Pinehurst specifically, the late and beloved Payne Stewart won in 1999. This would be his final major as he died in a plane crash just a few months later. Expect many mentions and nods to this great man throughout the week. Martin Kaymer won here in 2014. Mind-blowingly, this was his last elite win. One of the runners-up in 2014 was Rickie Fowler so he is one to watch this week.

Recent Champions and Contenders

In 2021, Jon Rahm etched his name in history by claiming his first major title at the US Open, showcasing his unwavering determination and skill. The following year, Matt Fitzpatrick emerged victorious, becoming the first Englishman to win the US Open since Justin Rose in 2013. Last year, Wyndham Clark's remarkable performance at Los Angeles Country Club saw him claim the coveted trophy, solidifying his place among the game's elite.

As we look ahead to 2024, the field is wide-open with talented contenders fighting for the title. Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion, is undoubtedly a favourite, having displayed remarkable consistency in his game. Let’s hope the local police don’t intervene this week.

Rory McIlroy, the four-time major winner, wants to add another US Open title to his impressive resume. Rory is needing a major win soon and the golfing world is behind him to get it. His game is exceptional but it seems like the monkey on his back is getting heavier and more distracting.

Wyndham Clark, the defending champion, hasn’t had the best season. You never know what this week will do for his spirits though. Meanwhile, newest major champion, Xander Schauffele and the electric Bryson DeChambeau will be looking to capitalise on their recent form and claim a US Open victory.

The Challenge Awaits

As the countdown to the 2024 US Open Championship begins, golf fans around the world are expecting some major drama, excitement, and unforgettable moments. The US Open is a prestigious event that always delivers.

Finally, the US Open is one of those events that brings great stories. The fact that it is an open event means that there is often a name from the lower levels of professional golf or an amateur that brings a story. Some club pro or elite amateur takes their chance and is thrust into the limelight.

Of course, there is an award for the lowest amateur of the week and this often is a glimpse into the future of the game. Look out for emerging talent this week. One thing is guaranteed, we will leave this week with some new stories and another great chapter in the history of golf.
