Killarney Golf Club
Located in Killarney National Park, surrounded by the lakes of Lough Leane, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club is home to two 18-hole Championship courses, Killeen and Mahony’s Point, along with a 9-hole course, Lackabane. Together the three courses have had the privilege of hosting many high-profile events including the Irish Open (1991, 1992, 2010 & 2011), the European Amateur Team Championship, the Curtis Cup, the Ladies Open Championship and many more great events.
A Brief History
- The club originally opened in 1893 and is steeped in history, widely known as one of the most historic golf clubs in Ireland.
- It reopened in July 2006 - the Killeen Course greens have been made faster and moved closer to the water on a lot of the holes, making this an imposing, yet highly enjoyable test of golf.
- The surrounding 25,000 acres of the Killarney National Park provide beautiful views and spectacular nature throughout the round.
- At 7,077 yards, Killeen will challenge even the biggest of hitters.
Featured hole at Killeen - 5th Hole
The fifth hole at Killeen is said to be one of the toughest holes on the course with a demanding tee shot and a dog leg to the right. The green is also protected by some well-placed bunkers.
Other notable holes at Killeen include:
- 7th hole: A 366-yard par 4 that doglegs slightly left, with an elevated green surrounded by bunkers.
- 13th hole: A long, demanding par. With a stream in front of the green forces players to decide whether to play short or go for the green. The 13th hole is also known as the "Tiger Hole", it's a risk/reward hole that's not for the faint-hearted!
- 18th hole: Is a strong finishing hole, a par 4, 476 yards long. Bunkered down and rises dramatically to the castle. A creek and mature trees line the entire left side with a challenging finish with water down the road and trees.
