Ballyliffin Old Links Golf Course

The Old Links ripples into the far distance, delivering an enjoyable challenge to golfers of every ability and taste. Nick Faldo strengthened The Old Links Course by adding even more thrills to an already epic experience, delighting members and visitors alike with his refreshed vision. The location is divine; the course hugs the shoreline overlooking the golden beach of Pollan Strand and Glashedy Rock

The Old is a classic links, with fairways that pitch and roll through wild dunes. This is links golf at its most traditional, where the perfect drive will often find an awkward lie. If you are afflicted with a lack of balance, you will struggle, because you’ll rarely get a flat stance. For about 20 years, the Old course remained well and truly outside of the limelight.

In many ways, this has put Ballyliffin on the map and although the newer Glashedy Links is more suited to professional tournaments due to its length, the Old Links is as good and ranks amongst Ireland’s top 20 courses.

A Brief History

  • The course, designed by Eddie Hackett is set just under 7,000 yards off the tips.
  • The Old Links at Ballyliffin Old Links opened for play in 1973 and is as traditional as links golf gets, where a perfect drive will often find an awkward lie.
  • The Old Links received some attention from Faldo’s design team in 2004, who commented ‘this is one of the most natural links courses I have ever played’.

 Featured Hole: 14th

The 14th hole, also known as "Bulbin", is a notable hole at the Old Links of Ballyliffin Golf Club in Ireland.

Another notable hole at the Old Links is The 7th hole: A steep downhill hole with a green surrounded by bunkers and water

Known For: Championship Course

The par-3s on the Old Links are fantastic with the 179-yard 5th possibly the best. Called ‘The Tank’ it is an intimidating tee shot to a stage-like green on an elevated plateau surround by dunes.

The Old Links has hosted the European Tour’s Irish Seniors Open and the Irish Women’s Close.
