When you think of Scottish links golf, you imagine wild dunes, ocean winds, and centuries of history. But every now and then, a new course comes along that blends tradition with modern brilliance - and that’s exactly what I found at Dumbarnie Links on my recent The Experience Golf luxury tour of Scotland.

Immaculate from Tee to Green

From the moment you step onto the first tee, Dumbarnie takes your breath away. The visuals are stunning - sweeping coastal views, rolling fairways, and perfectly manicured turf. The course is pristine; the fairways feel like greens, and even the tee boxes are immaculate and perfectly flat.

It’s a course that welcomes everyone - from serious players looking to test their skills, to those simply wanting to enjoy the landscape and atmosphere.

A Course Full of Character

One of the things that struck me most was how every hole feels unique. No two look or play the same, and yet the flow of the course feels seamless. Each hole feels like it’s in its own bubble - private and peaceful. You rarely see another group, which gives you that sense of exclusivity that defines The Experience Golf tours.

Dumbarnie might be a new-style links course, but it still captures the essence of Scottish golf. The layout, conditioning, and facilities are all world-class, creating a balance between tradition and luxury that few courses achieve.

My Favourite Holes

  • 10th Hole - A true test of golf. At around 500 yards into the wind and playing as a par 4 from the back tees, this hole demands precision and nerve. With water in play and subtle elevation changes, it’s one of the toughest yet most rewarding holes I’ve played.

  • 17th Hole - A brilliant design that brings strategy into play. The stone wall running across the fairway makes you think twice - it’s about being clever and cautious, not just hitting long.

  • 18th Hole - A fantastic finishing hole. The stunning backdrop and the sense of arrival as you play toward the clubhouse make it truly memorable.

The Challenge

Make no mistake, Dumbarnie can be tough if you’re not on your game. The rough is unforgiving - even a small miss can lead to a lost ball. During my round, the wind was calm, but I can imagine how dramatically the course would change on a windy Scottish day.

My Advice for Playing Dumbarnie

  • Keep it in play off the tee - Position over power wins here.

  • Trust your eyes when putting - The greens don’t have as much break as you might think - focus between the ball and the hole rather than searching for hidden movement.

First-Class Facilities and Service

Before and after your round, you’re treated to the kind of hospitality that defines The Experience Golf. The practice facilities - from the driving range to the chipping and putting greens - are exceptional.
A special mention goes to the staff, who were warm, welcoming, and professional throughout. The whisky on the first tee is a lovely Scottish touch that sets the tone for the day - relaxed, authentic, and memorable.

Dumbarnie Links is a modern classic - a course that celebrates the spirit of links golf while delivering the comfort, service, and quality that make The Experience Golf tours so special. Every golfer should play it at least once.

If you’re planning a golf trip to Scotland, make sure Dumbarnie is on your list and make sure you book through The Experience Golf. Trust me - you won’t regret it.
