Scottie Scheffler once again showed why he’s the world’s best, producing a commanding performance to win the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush with a final score of -17. The American was in complete control all week on the challenging Dunluce Links, sealing his second Open title - and adding yet another major to an already remarkable season.

Royal Portrush was true to its reputation, testing the field with unpredictable coastal winds, deep bunkers, and punishing rough. Scheffler handled it all with typical composure and precision, posting rounds of 67, 68, 65, and 67 to finish clear of the chasing pack.

As Scheffler remained at the summit, Harris English, Chris Gotterup and Wyndham Clark emerged from the pack to take up the chase. English recorded an eagle and two birdies on the back nine to finish solo second at -15, while Gotterup fired five birdies in a final-round 67 to secure third at -14. Clark went two shots better with a superb 65, backing up a pair of 66s to close at -11, matching Matt Fitzpatrick and Haotong Li. Like Bryson DeChambeau, who surged with a closing 64 to reach -9, Clark will rue a disappointing opening round that left too much ground to make up.

Local hero Rory McIlroy sparked huge roars from the Northern Irish galleries as he mounted a charge on Saturday, where he posted a superb 66 to move into contention. But a cold putter and a costly bogey, double-bogey stretch on Sunday saw him slip back to -10, tied for seventh alongside Robert MacIntyre and Xander Schauffele - another near-miss at his home Open. If the support and cheers could have carried him to victory, then he would have won twice over.

A key moment came at the 14th on Sunday, when English’s eagle and Hovland’s aggressive play briefly cut Scheffler’s lead, but Scottie calmly responded with birdies at 15 and 17 to slam the door shut on any chance of a playoff.

As the final putt dropped, Scheffler walked to the 18th green through a tunnel of fans lining the fairway ten deep. When the marshals opened the ropes, spectators sprinted to the edge of the iconic horseshoe grandstand for a glimpse of greatness. Normally so unflappable, Scheffler dabbed his eyes as he embraced wife Meredith and held his son Bennett - who was blissfully unaware of the moment but will one day learn about this celebrated chapter in his father’s remarkable career.

Scottie Scheffler, Claret Jug in hand and cheers echoing over Royal Portrush, sealed a wire-to-wire victory that cements his place among golf’s modern greats.
