Royal Portrush was true to its reputation, testing the field with unpredictable coastal winds, deep bunkers, and punishing rough. Scheffler handled it all with typical composure and precision, posting rounds of 67, 68, 65, and 67 to finish clear of the chasing pack.
As Scheffler remained at the summit, Harris English, Chris Gotterup and Wyndham Clark emerged from the pack to take up the chase. But a cold putter and a costly bogey, double-bogey stretch on Sunday saw him slip back to -10, tied for seventh alongside Robert MacIntyre and Xander Schauffele - another near-miss at his home Open. If the support and cheers could have carried him to victory, then he would have won twice over.
A key moment came at the 14th on Sunday, when English’s eagle and Hovland’s aggressive play briefly cut Scheffler’s lead, but Scottie calmly responded with birdies at 15 and 17 to slam the door shut on any chance of a playoff.
