Imagine shooting a 62 on one of the best golf courses in the world. Imagine doing this on Open Championship Sunday with one of the best players of our generation breathing down your neck the whole way. Who could forget the scintillating Sunday in 2012 between Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson?
We can’t expect to be treated to such a phenomenal spectacle this year, but we can look forward to the resplendent Ayrshire links. Royal Troon is the closest Open rota course to Prestwick, the birthplace of The Open, which makes it an even more special host venue.

The Majesty of Royal Troon
Royal Troon Golf Club, located in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland, boasts a rich history dating back to 1878. Situated along the rugged coastline, the course offers breathtaking views of the Firth of Clyde and the Isle of Arran, creating a truly picturesque setting for golfers to enjoy.
Many incredible course architects have shaped this links to what we see today. From Charles Hunter, who laid out the original few holes, to Willie Fernie, James Braid, and most recently McKenzie & Ebert.
Every hole at Troon is special, but there are some definite standouts as you make your way around the course. The gentle opener, well as long as you don’t slice it or end up in a bunker, lulls you into a false sense of security for the day ahead.
The 8th at Royal Troon, the shortest hole on The Open rota, is a treacherous little beastie. The Postage Stamp is just over 100 yards, but if you miss the green, then you’ll pray for a bogey. They’ve even made the infamous “Coffin” bunker deeper this year.
One of the most feared tee shots in Open golf is Railway, the 11th. A blind tee shot, usually into the breeze, to a tight fairway flanked by a railway line. Heading to this tee shot in contention on Open Sunday must be one of golf’s most daunting challenges.
Royal Troon is relentless. Not just in the challenge it provides but, in the beauty, and quality of the links too. It is a course that demands the best, and this can be seen in the past champions here. From Tom Watson to Tom Weiskopf, only the most skilled win The Open at Royal Troon.
The Honor of Hosting The Open
Royal Troon's selection as the venue for The Open Championship 2024 is a testament to its esteemed reputation within the golfing world. With a history of hosting prestigious tournaments, including nine previous Opens, the club has proven itself as a worthy stage for golf's most revered championship.
Joining the ranks of legendary venues such as St. Andrews, Royal Birkdale, and Royal St. George's, Royal Troon adds another chapter to its storied legacy. This year will mark 101 years since The Open first came to Troon, a testament to the quality of this links.
