The Experience Golf Team

The world of women's golf is experiencing a thrilling era, with talented athletes like Lydia Ko leading the charge. Recently, the spotlight was on the 2024 AIG Women's Open, where Ko emerged victorious, adding another prestigious title to her already impressive career.

The New Zealander ended an eight-year major drought in the most prestigious of all venues, The Old Course. Not only this, but she had also just returned from Paris where she won the Olympic gold.

The 2024 AIG Women's Open

The 2024 AIG Women's Open took place at the historic Old Course in St Andrews, a venue known for its challenging conditions and rich golfing history. It had been some time since the Old Course had hosted the Women’s Open and it was a welcome return to the best in the game. It was great to see how these athletes tackled the course. It was an exhilarating week.

Lydia Ko clinched the title with a final-round 69, finishing at seven-under-par, two shots ahead of her closest competitors. The tournament featured a tightly packed leaderboard with top contenders like Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu, Jiyai Shin, and Ruoning Yin, all battling for the top spot. Ko's victory was marked by her calm demeanor and strategic play, especially during the final holes where she secured a crucial birdie on the 18th to seal her win.

This was not the closing of a golfer trying to end an eight-year major drought. It was the clinical and incredibly impressive win of someone with momentum and a gold medal. It is hard to argue that her win in Paris didn’t contribute to this victory.

Lydia Ko: A Golfing Prodigy

Lydia Ko, originally from New Zealand, has been a prominent figure in women's golf since she burst onto the scene as a teenager. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Ko moved to New Zealand at a young age and began playing golf at the age of five. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the youngest player to win a professional golf tour event at just 14 years old.

Ko's career is decorated with numerous accolades. She has won multiple LPGA Tour events and was the youngest player to achieve the world number one ranking in professional golf. Her recent victory at the AIG Women's Open is her third major title, with her previous major win being the 2016 Chevron Championship. Additionally, Ko's triumph at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she won a gold medal, further solidified her status as one of the game's greats.

Other Top Names in Women's Golf

Aside from Lydia Ko, the women's golf scene is brimming with talent. Nelly Korda, the current world number one, is a formidable competitor known for her powerful drives and precision on the greens. Korda has multiple major victories and continues to be a dominant force on the LPGA Tour.

Another notable player is Lilia Vu, who has consistently performed at a high level. Vu, the defending champion of the AIG Women's Open, showcased her skills once again by finishing in a tie for second place this year. Her ability to perform under pressure makes her a key player to watch in upcoming tournaments.

What's Next on the Women's Golf Calendar?

The Solheim Cup, a prestigious team event between Europe and the United States, is on the horizon. This biennial competition is a highlight of the women's golf calendar, showcasing the best talents from both sides of the Atlantic in a thrilling match-play format.

This is a bonus Solheim Cup this year as the organisers aim to reset the tournament. Normally, this event takes place in between Ryder Cup years but the Covid pandemic had caused this to change. This is an event that shouldn’t have to fight for viewership over the Ryder Cup and deserves to stand alone. With that in mind, we are in the middle of a lucky stint of two Solheim Cups in a row to reset the schedule.

In conclusion, the women's golf scene is thriving, with Lydia Ko's recent victory at the AIG Women's Open highlighting the incredible talent and competitive spirit present in the sport. Nelly Korda’s wildly impressive run of victories this year had the golf world alight with excitement. It brought a lot of deserved attention to the women’s game. It is also important to note that the playing of the Women’s Open at St Andrews brought added attention to the tournament.

As the calendar progresses, fans can look forward to more exciting tournaments and remarkable performances from the world's best female golfers.
