There’s something special about a great par 3. Whether it’s the stunning backdrop, the challenge of a well-guarded green, or the simple thrill of hitting the perfect tee shot, Britain’s golf courses are home to some of the finest short holes in the world. From dramatic linksland to pristine parkland, here are some of the very best par 3 holes in Britain - each a must-play for any golf enthusiast.

Moortown Golf Club – The Gibraltar Hole (England)

Moortown Golf Club, one of the finest inland courses in England, is home to The Gibraltar Hole - a par 3 that offers both beauty and challenge in equal measure. Designed by the legendary Dr Alister MacKenzie, this stunning hole features an elevated green, well-protected by deep bunkers that demand precision from the tee. This is a story about more than just a hole though. Members didn’t have the budget to get a whole course designed. Dr McKenzie created the best hole he could with the budget available and endeavored that this hole would bring in investment to create a full course, it worked.

At around 150 yards, it may not be the longest par 3, but with tricky wind conditions and a small target, it requires both skill and nerve to conquer.

Royal Troon – The Postage Stamp (Scotland)

No list of Britain’s best par 3s would be complete without The Postage Stamp, the iconic 8th hole at Royal Troon. Measuring just 123 yards, this deceptively short hole is one of the most famous in the world. The tiny, well-bunkered green demands pinpoint accuracy - any shot slightly off-line can leave you battling to escape the deep, unforgiving sand traps. Even the best players in the world have struggled here, proving that sometimes the smallest holes can be the most formidable.

Kingsbarns Golf Links – The 15th Hole (Scotland)

One of Scotland’s most breathtaking courses, Kingsbarns Golf Links offers dramatic coastal golf at its finest. The 15th hole, a spectacular par 3, plays directly along the rugged coastline with panoramic views of the North Sea. At around 180 yards, this hole requires a confident strike to carry the waves and avoid the cavernous bunkers guarding the green. Whether you hit the perfect shot or find yourself scrambling to save par, the setting alone makes this hole one of the most memorable in Britain.

Royal County Down – The 4th Hole (Northern Ireland)

Widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest courses, Royal County Down is packed with stunning holes, but its 4th hole stands out as one of Britain’s best par 3s. At around 230 yards, this long par 3 plays across a valley to a raised green, flanked by natural dunes and deep bunkers. With the towering Mourne Mountains as a backdrop, the scenery is as spectacular as the challenge itself.

Royal Porthcawl – The 7th Hole (Wales)

Wales boasts some truly outstanding links golf, and Royal Porthcawl’s 7th hole is one of its finest par 3s. Measuring 165 yards, this hole is exposed to the elements, meaning that wind direction can dramatically change the way it plays. The green is nestled between dunes and bunkers, making club selection crucial. A well-struck shot will reward you with a make-able birdie putt, but anything less could leave you scrambling to save par.
